Sardine Rolls

Sardines are so underrated! These pull-apart soft and fluffy rolls are filled with a creamy buttery sardine paste with a hint of Italian herbs and garlic. Truly tasty!


Ingredients (about 6-8 rolls)

Dough:

  • 240ml Lukewarm Water

  • 2tsp Dry Instant Yeast

  • 500g Auntie’s Mix Flour

  • 3tbsp Sugar

  • 1tsp Salt

  • 2tbsp Oil From the Sardines

  • 1 Fresh Egg

    Filling:

  • 2 Cans Sardines in Oil (drained, reserve 2tbsp for the dough)

  • 2tbsp Salted Butter

  • 1tsp Garlic Granules

  • 1tsp Italian Seasoning

  • 1/2tsp Salt

  • Freshly Ground Pepper


Method:

  1. Prepare the dough, in a large bowl or food mixer, add all the dry ingredients, followed by the liquid ones.

  2. Knead for 10 minutes until a soft dough is formed.

  3. Cover the bowl with cling film and let it rise fore 1-2 hours until doubled in size.

  4. In the meantime prepare the filling. 

  5. Place the butter in a small bowl and season it with the Italian herbs and garlic granules. 

  6. Using a fork, mix them well until a cream is formed.

  7. Add the drained sardines and mix everything to form a paste.

  8. Deflate the dough and open it onto a floured surface. 

  9. Roughly make it into a rectangular shape and spread the sardine base on top.

  10. Roll the dough from its length.

  11. Cut the rolls (about 2 inches each)

  12. Place them into a baking dish lined with baking paper.

  13. Bake in a preheated oven for about 30mins at 175°c, or until nicely browned.
